In Light of Lanterns
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux
Discord Server:
In Light of Lanterns is a completely free trading card game, with no in-game purchase, and inspired by the game Alteil. Alteil was one of the first games to be fully playable online and it had many spinoffs including Alteil Horizons and Alteil Neo. If you have never played Alteil before but you have played other collectible card games, then here is a quick comparison.
If you are new to the game and want some reference points on how similar or different the game is to other collectible card games, the following points should give an idea and introduce you to the game:
No draw
In Light of Lanterns is a card game that has no concept of draw and the whole deck can be used as a hand.
The situation of "I could've won if I had drawn that card" is common in card games, but in In Light of Lanterns, you should be able to respond to all situations you expected during your deck building. In MtG for example, overly drawing lands or not drawing enough lands in most cases lead to an inevitable loss. Drawing mechanic in general makes a deck's effectiveness unstable and so most of meta decks with consistent win rates almost always have search mechanics to find the winning cards in the deck and move them to the hand. In Light of Lanterns skips that and makes deck's effectiveness purely depending on the deck concept and not on whether or not you drew the right cards to execute that concept.
No player-exclusive turns
In all card games, going first is almost always an advantage and noticeably affects win rates. This is also why tournaments always adopt the best of three format because one game is for sure not enough to decide who is the winner. Despite that, best of three will inevitably leave an uneven number of going-firsts between players. The third match will still give an advantage of going first to one player over the other even if the first 2 matches were split even. In In Light of Lanterns, phases and turns are played by both players at the same time. Card summoning, battle, and so on happen in phases and each phase starts for both players at the same time. During battle phase, cards on the field go in the order of a stat called AGI (agility) assigned to each card.
If you think this is great, let's see you at the arena.
